Mom And Child Die In The Car While Dad Shovels Snow Outside. The Police Are Now Warning Everyone About This Silent Killer.

This is a very tragic and difficult to take in news story just out of New Jersey.
As they prepared to head out on a cold winter day, a mother and her two young children, aged 1 and 3, remained inside their vehicle as the father cleared up the snow on and around the car.
No one realized that that the car’s tailpipe was clogged.
Within minutes, the mother and their 1-year-old were dead, while their 3-year-old remains in critical condition, with her chance of survival low.
This occurred over the weekend of January 23rd and with winter still around for a while, I think it’s absolutely crucial that everyone share to spread awareness about this “silent killer”.

According to the Washington Post, a mother and their two children, aged one and three, sat in the car when it became too cold to wait outside.
Meanwhile, the father began to shovel around the car, not noticing that the tailpipe was blocked. This pushed deadly carbon monoxide gas into the car, killing the mother and the one-year-old “within minutes”.
Carbon monoxide is often referred to as the “silent killer” as it is colorless, odorless, tasteless — and extremely toxic.
It causes people to lose consciousness in minutes.
“Any snow that covers your tailpipe, you want to shovel the snow from the back of the car and clear the tailpipe before you even start the car,” Battalion Chief Chris DiBella told local news network WABC.
From 1999 through 2010, more than 5,100 people died from accidental carbon monoxide poisoning in the United States, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.
Several municipalities in and around New Jersey as well as local police have since issued this important warning: “Remove snow from car exhaust pipe before sitting in car and letting it warm up. Failure to remove snow can result in carbon monoxide poisoning. Be sure there is ample room for air to circulate in front and behind your car to allow any exhaust to dissipate and not build up around your car.”
This is a very painful story to read, but when I saw it, I also realized it was something many, many of us would never think about. That’s why it’s absolutely crucial that this be shared by everyone so that similar tragedies be avoided at all costs.
Please always make sure your car’s tailpipe isn’t covered with snow or anything else before starting it.

As I sit here at 3:30 am ish, not being able to sleep from my hip pain, I am realizing that these folks image must mean a whole lot to them. In what way can I be a possible threat to their posts? Then I am reminded that Jesus was disowned in his own town of Nazareth.. What a great privilege to be "not  their friend" any more.. I suppose my very vivid and sometimes shocking call to Christ by the posts I share has offended their sweet spirits.. Well, the grim reality is that it is persecution from your own sheepfold that is what Christ talked about in the Word. One on- line friendship dissolved because of the various views on Jesus' return. There are Pre Tribulation, Mid Tribulation and Post Tribulation views. Even-though, it is only separated by three and a half years, some folks don't like you for not sharing the exact same view as yours. Wow..   Imagine, me being a threat to their sanitary way of proclaiming the gospel, or me being the free spirited evangelist that offended them.. If I had hate mail from other faiths I could see, but to be disowned by your own.,, well that is different. Not painful, but perplexing... I thought we were pushing the same cart. Am I representing a different gospel then they are? Are we going to get along in Heaven? Are we going to be friends in Heaven? Is my meditation on the Savior not sanitary enough for their ears? So many questions, but I don't think I will get an answer in this life time.

Many want a gentler way of evangelism, by being silent, role model, until, 'they ask' to be witnessed to.. I personally find this witness cowardly, as Christ certainly spoke the Word boldly, and so did Paul, and countless other disciples. I am also reminded of Catherin Kuhlman.. When I heard one of her interviews, she mentioned that when she went into those hotel rooms, she was the most lonely of all people., after having held services for tens of thousands. She said she died a thousand deaths before she stepped on the stage, and proceeded with the healing services.. Here is one of those interviews.

I'm so Troubled

Today was another blurr of a day. Cleaning, getting pills from the pharmacy, returning empty bottles for refund, buying milk and eggs in the drug store, depositing a cheque, and squeezing in a doctors appointment, all in time to have the car back for my husband to use it for his work.
I have been pretty quiet about a notably large lump under my armpit lately. I did not want to worry the children. I noticed pain sleeping on my shoulder, and upon investigating furthere, when pressed, my lymph nodes hurt. I always associated this 'feminine wings' under my armpit as normal, and don't look for lumps under there..Also being right hand dominant, I suppose a larger arm/shoulder is normal.  So when I realized how tender it was, I got scared.. I was on a cancellation list to get the ultra sound done, and today was my official chat with the doctor. The results were back, and apparently, it is just normal lymph nodes. I was almost disappointed, as I fully had prepared my husband what to do incase of my departure. I don't know what else I am to accomplish down here on this planet. It seems pretty bleak. My doctor from South Africa, says that conditions are horrible there as well. Our government here in Canada will likely go bankrupt under Trudeau. So many things to look forward to , including a new hip if Jesus tarries. Now my hip pain has extended into my right knee, and I cannot put weight on it. So again, I'm on a cancellation list, and take pretty severe pain medication.

One good news is that our home was appraised fairly high by a realtor. There are bidding wars on favorable homes, and most are selling above asking price. Perhaps this is the time to downsize. Maybe the real estate bubble will bust any day, and we should sell as soon as possible. I am so torn. Does the Lord really expect me to have this house in show room condition with my deteriorated hips? How will I ever manage to de clutter this home when I can barely walk? If we don't move now, will we have the strength and energy to do it when we are older? Where will we move to? Where will my girls move to? This is a valley of decisions I don't want to be in right now. Can I part with this home that we love, where Deborah's memories are written all around? Do I want to live in a condo or a townhouse? I'm so troubled.

La Loche hopes for better future after deadly shootings, struggles with youth suicides

Residents of northern Saskatchewan village say more resources are needed to help troubled young people

Hope for a better La Loche has helped keep Perry Herman alive.
The 27-year-old resident of the village with Saskatchewan's highest suicide rate — three times the national average — admits he has thought about taking his own life. But faith, family, friends and hope have helped him survive.




"The thought of tomorrow's going to be a better day. La Loche is going to be a better place. People are going to start changing. In hopes of that, that keeps me going. I want to live to see that day," Herman said, standing off to the side of a prayer meeting in the northern Saskatchwan village's community hall on Sunday night.

Although the prayer meeting is held every two weeks, this one was different. Food was being served — soup, bread, coffee and dessert — to help the community because there were so many people from out of town in La Loche to be with their families during a time of great hardship and grief.

On Friday afternoon, teacher Adam Wood and Marie Janvier, a teacher's aide, were gunned down at La Loche Community School, where seven people were also injured. Brothers Dayne and Drayden Fontaine, aged 17 and 13 respectively, were killed at a nearby residence.

A 17-year-old boy has been charged with four counts of first-degree murder and seven counts of attempted murder. He made his first appearance in court on Monday.

Remote community

La Loche is a remote community of mostly Dene people. It is almost a six hour-drive north of Prince Albert, the city considered a gateway to the north.

Of the slightly more than 2,600 people who live in the community, 220 who are 15 and older have a high school diploma,  according to the 2011 National Household Survey done by Statistics Canada. The labour force participation rate was estimated at 26.6 per cent, meaning a quarter of people who are of working age were actively seeking work or employed. The unemployment rate was estimated at 22.3 per cent, meaning almost a quarter of people actively seeking a job have not found one.
About 38 per cent of households have been deemed not suitable, according to the National Occupancy Standard.
The Federation of Saskatchewan Indian Nations Chief Bobby Cameron said the community is faced with crowded housing, underfunded education and lack of addiction support. He said those circumstances are similar to many other indigenous communities across the province.
"We're talking about a community that has two security guards at the liquor store, but no security at the schools," said Cameron. "Something's wrong there."

For Herman, a better La Loche includes resources to help young people cope with life. A foster child since birth, he said his upbringing was confusing. He went from foster home to foster home, being taught different ways to live each time he moved.

"We need somebody to tell us, 'Oh, this is the stuff you're going to be feeling, it's natural to feel stuff like that and these are the things you need to do,' or 'these are the steps you have to take in order for you to move on,'" he said.
"We don't have people doing that for us."

When La Loche's acting mayor Kevin Janvier was asked during a press conference Sunday afternoon what the village needed following the shootings, he simply said, "we need lots of resources."

"[We need to] try to pull together, get rid of drugs and alcohol, to a certain extent, I mean, I have nothing against drugs or alcohol, but it's the way it's been abused," he said.
Don Herman said young people need to be taught the old ways. He said modern life helps contribute to the high suicide rate.

"Now, with the modern world, the furnace is there, the running water's there, their technology's there," he said.
"All they do is sit in their room inside playing with their technology, and they're not used to working outside. That's why they say it's always boring and they end up with their lives like this."

'We need to build up this respect'

In the 1960s and 1970s, the kids were outside most of the time, doing what they had to do, like haul wood and water, Herman said.

Marie Trottier said the town she grew up in needs a way for elders to be involved with young people, and young people need to be involved with elders.

"We need to build up this respect," she said. "It's a good people community. I know that. It's only that we need a few things that need to happen."

Youth lift the veil of stigma around mental health at ‘Talk at the Top’

North Vancouver, BC – High school students are lifting the veil of stigma surrounding mental health at a youth-led summit this weekend at Grouse Mountain.
Vancouver Coastal Health, Bell Canada, and the Canadian Mental Health Association are sponsoring the Talk at the Top summit, where students from nearly 20 schools from Pemberton to Deep Cove are conversing and committing to initiatives they can take to their schools and communities in advance of National Child and Youth Mental Health Day in May.
This is a free event designed to create a safe environment where youth leaders can gather in collaboration with community and service providers to strategically plan and develop actions aimed at reducing stigmas associated with mental illness and young people.
In its fourth year, the summit has expanded its programming, kicking off Saturday, January 23 with a concert at the City of North Vancouver Atrium. On Sunday delegates will gather at Grouse Mountain.
Speakers include Sophie Moggridge, a third-year University of Victoria student with Jack.org; Bryce Evans, the founder of The One Project, a photography community for people with depression and anxiety; and youth leaders Nolan Querns and Lily Diamond, who will lead question-and-answer sessions on the intersection of mental health and Asperger’s, and Obsessive-Compulsive Disorder/Depression/Stigma, respectively.
The summit concludes with a youth-led discussion on approaches to prevent and confront mental health slurs, and the establishment of personal, school and community initiatives.

One of my favorite contributors to my post.. He doesn't know this, but I've elected him to be that individual.  see below
Today, I am going to clean the grave plaque/stone for Deborah. It is a sunny day. I'll see how the plastic flowers held out in the rainy storms. Soon real fowers will adorn her grave, if the Lord tarries with Hi return. I hope NOT, but it is His timing, not mine.  Later I will put seedlings in planters, and start the gardening process indoors. I just wish I did not throw away all the little containers last year.  Also watching the snowstorm that touched down in the eastern coast of the USA. This massive snow storm brought many States to a halt. A national Ballet of Canada has also been cancelled, which was scheduled to perform "The Winter's Tale' at the Kennedy Centre.  Even China has had more snow than they usually get. So do spend some quiet time indoors, while getting your inner strenght from our Creator.

This is a video made in honor of my daughter Deborah, who passed a year and a half ago due to mental illness. She took her life left a tremendous hole in our heart. There isn't a day that we do not think about her or talk about her or cry in silence in missing her. For my more recent readers, I thought I would share this video again, to bring awareness to mental health , that may or may not even be obvious to the families. I keep having to drive over the bridge that she jumped off of, on occasion, and feel as if I will suffocate with pain. However, I know that she would want us to live, and live lives victorious, despite our circumstances. We need to keep talking about anxiety, depression, OCD, and other illnesses, that may bring about suicide. We have to be aware of the signs that are there, even if they are very subtle indeed.

This mindset is very important in this season - we are about to enter a difficult time of transition for the whole world: - many brothers and sister in Christ have been killed already for the sake of Jesus Christ. Are you ready to stand in faith until death??
When shall the Rapture be? Only The FATHER knows the day and the hour. But it shall be before the opening of the 7th seal (Rev 8).
So, among other things, what must happen before the 7th seal is opened? The 5th seal must be opened and the number of saints to be killed must be completed (Rev 6:9-11.)
Then the 6th seal (Rev 6:12-17) shall be opened before the Rapture (Rev 7:9-17), and then the 7th seal is opened (Rev 8).
It goes without saying that many saints must be killed and beheaded, and the number must be complete as it is written - during the great tribulation.
And it is written plainly, that the Raptured saints are those who "Come Out Of The Great Tribulation." (see Rev 7:14.)
Therefore, we must put on a mindset - to be ready to die for the sake of pure worship and love for the One And Only True GOD, HE Is The GOD And Father of our Lord and Saviour Jesus Christ who died for us, HE Is the Almighty and most Holy GOD - The GOD of Abraham, Isaac and Jacob: YAHUWAH ADONAI ELOHIM EL ELYON.
Saints of GOD in North Korea, China, Pakistan, Afghanistan, Syria, Iraq, Eritrea, Libya, Turkey, and so on... are already going through great tribulation and deaths for the sake of Love for Jesus Christ - Yahushua HaMashiach.
The word is out that this great tribulation shall reach America in the first quarter of 2016 and the darkness shall increase through the year, and it shall spread to other nations.
Watch and pray.
Who knows how long The FATHER Will wait for the to-be-raptured saints to remain IN the great tribulation before the Rapture happens?
Take note again - the raptured ones "Come Out of the great tribulation."
"So he said to me, "These are the ones who COME OUT of the great tribulation, and washed their robes and made them white in the blood of the Lamb. "

Therefore... Love The LORD with all your heart and be ready for the Rapture always with the beauty of holiness, and yes... be ready for persecution and death for the sake of love for Jesus Christ and His Word no matter the tribulation you may experience.
Never ever bow to any other god and never receive any mark in/on your right hand or forehead...!
I must confess, that after seeing videos of Christian being beheaded, crucified, burnt alive, shoot dead, sliced on the throat, dragged on a rope, and other means that various Antichrist have shed their blood recently - especially the Islamic Jihadist and Apocalyptic Muslims; I now have an open mind...
Yet we know only in parts:- this is most desirable: LET THE WILL OF GOD FOR MY LIFE BE DONE, in Jesus mighty name.

Feds Advised Banks to Cover Up Major Energy-Related Losses.

This is what took place: the Dallas Fed met with the banks a week ago and effectively suspended mark-to-market on energy debts and as a result no impairments are being written down. Furthermore, as we reported earlier this week, the Fed indicated "under the table" that banks were to work with the energy companies on delivering without a markdown on worry that a backstop, or bail-in, was needed after reviewing loan losses which would exceed the current tier 1 capital tranches.
In other words, the Fed has advised banks to cover up major energy-related losses.

Earlier this week, before first JPM and then Wells Fargo revealed that not all is well when it comes to bank energy loan exposure, a small Tulsa-based lender, BOK Financial, said that its fourth-quarter earnings would miss analysts’ expectations because its loan-loss provisions would be higher than expected as a result of a single unidentified energy-industry borrower. This is what the bank said:

“A single borrower reported steeper than expected production declines and higher lease operating expenses, leading to an impairment on the loan. In addition, as we noted at the start of the commodities downturn in late 2014, we expected credit migration in the energy portfolio throughout the cycle and an increased risk of loss if commodity prices did not recover to a normalized level within one year. As we are now into the second year of the downturn, during the fourth quarter we continued to see credit grade migration and increased impairment in our energy portfolio. The combination of factors necessitated a higher level of provision expense."

Another bank, this time the far larger Regions Financial, said its fourth-quarter charge-offs jumped $18 million from the prior quarter to $78 million, largely because of problems with a single unspecified energy borrower. More than one-quarter of Regions’ energy loans were classified as “criticized” at the end of the fourth quarter.
It didn't stop there and and as the WSJ added, "It’s starting to spread" according to William Demchak, chief executive of PNC Financial Services Group Inc. on a conference call after the bank’s earnings were announced. Credit issues from low energy prices are affecting "anybody who was in the game as the oil boom started,” he said. PNC said charge-offs rose in the fourth quarter from the prior quarter but didn’t specify whether that was due to issues in its relatively small $2.6 billion oil-and-gas portfolio.
Then, on Friday, U.S. Bancorp disclosed the specific level of reserves it holds against its $3.2 billion energy portfolio for the first time. "The reason we did that is that oil is under $30" said Andrew Cecere, the bank’s chief operating officer. What else will Bancorp disclose if oil drops below $20... or $10?
It wasn't just the small or regional banks either: as we first reported, on Thursday JPMorgan did something it hasn't done in 22 quarter: its net loan loss reserve increased as a result of a jump in energy loss reserves. On the earnings call, Jamie Dimon said that while he is not worried about big oil companies, his bank has started to increase provisions against smaller energy firms.


Then yesterday it was the turn of the one bank everyone had been waiting for, the one which according to many has the greatest exposure toward energy: Wells Fargo. To be sure, in order not to spook its investors, among whom most famously one Warren Buffett can be found, for Wells it was mostly "roses", although even Wells had no choice but to set aside $831 million for bad loans in the period, almost double the amount a year ago and the largest since the first quarter of 2013.
What was laughable is that the losses included $118 million from the bank’s oil and gas portfolio, an increase of $90 million from the third quarter. Why laughable? Because that $90 million in higher oil-and-gas loan losses was on a total of $17 billion in oil and gas loans, suggesting the bank has seen a roughly 0.5% impairment across its loan book in the past quarter.
How could this be? Needless to say, this struck us as very suspicious because it clearly suggests that something is going on for Wells (and all of its other peer banks), to rep and warrant a pristine balance sheet, at least until a "digital" moment arrives when just like BOK Financial, banks can no longer hide the accruing losses and has to charge them off, leading to a stock price collapse.
Which brings us to the focus of this post: earlier this week, before the start of bank earnings season, before BOK's startling announcement, we reported we had heard of a rumor that Dallas Fed members had met with banks in Houston and explicitly "told them not to force energy bankruptcies" and to demand asset sales instead.
We can now make it official, because moments ago we got confirmation from a second source who reports that according to an energy analyst who had recently met Houston funds to give his 1H16e update, one of his clients indicated that his firm was invited to a lunch attended by the Dallas Fed, which had previously instructed lenders to open up their entire loan books for Fed oversight; the Fed was shocked by with it had found in the non-public facing records. The lunch was also confirmed by employees at a reputable Swiss investment bank operating in Houston.

Furthermore, as we reported earlier this week, the Fed indicated "under the table" that banks were to work with the energy companies on delivering without a markdown on worry that a backstop, or bail-in, was needed after reviewing loan losses which would exceed the current tier 1 capital tranches.
In other words, the Fed has advised banks to cover up major energy-related losses.

 Why the reason for such unprecedented measures by the Dallas Fed? Our source notes that having run the numbers, it looks like at least 18% of some banks commercial loan book are impaired, and that’s based on just applying the 3Q marks for public debt to their syndicate sums.
In other words, the ridiculously low increase in loss provisions by the likes of Wells and JPM suggest two things: i) the real losses are vastly higher, and ii) it is the Fed's involvement that is pressuring banks to not disclose the true state of their energy "books."
Naturally, once this becomes public, the Fed risks a stampeded out of energy exposure because for the Fed to intervene in such a dramatic fashion it suggests that the US energy industry is on the verge of a subprime-like blow up.
Putting this all together, a source who wishes to remain anonymous, adds that equity has been levitating only because energy funds are confident the syndicates will remain in size to meet net working capital deficits. Which is a big gamble considering that as we first showed ten days ago, over the past several weeks banks have already quietly reduced their credit facility exposure to at least 25 deeply distressed (and soon to be even deeper distressed) names.


However, the big wildcard here is the Fed: what we do not know is whether as part of the Fed's latest "intervention", it has also promised to backstop bank loan losses. Keep in mind that according to Wolfe Research and many other prominent investors, as many as one-third of American oil-and-gas producers face bankruptcy and restructuring by mid-2017 unless oil rebounds dramatically from current levels.
However, the reflexivity paradox embedded in this problem was laid out yesterday by Goldman who explained that oil could well soar from here but only if massive excess supply is first taken out of the market, aka the "inflection phase."  In other words, for oil prices to surge, there would have to be a default wave across the US shale space, which would mean massive energy loan book losses, which may or may not mean another Fed-funded bailout of US and international banks with exposure to shale.
What does it all mean? Here is the conclusion courtesy of our source:

If revolvers are not being marked anymore, then it's basically early days of subprime when mbs payback schedules started to fall behind. My question for bank eps is if you issued terms in 2013 (2012 reserves) at 110/bbl, and redetermined that revolver in 2014 ‎at 86, how can you be still in compliance with that same rating and estimate in 2016 (knowing 2015 ffo and shutins have led to mechanically 40pc ffo decreases year over year and at least 20pc rebooting of pud and pdnp to 2p via suspended or cancelled programs). At what point in next 12 months does interest payments to that syndicate start to unmask the fact that tranch is never being recovered, which I think is what pva and mhr was all about.

Beyond just the immediate cash flow and stock price implications and fears that the situation with US energy is much more serious if it merits such an intimate involvement by the Fed, a far bigger question is why is the Fed once again in the a la carte bank bailout game, and how does it once again select which banks should mark their energy books to market (and suffer major losses), and which ones are allowed to squeeze by with fabricated marks and no impairment at all? Wasn't the purpose behind Yellen's rate hike to burst a bubble? Or is the Fed less than "macroprudential" when it realizes that pulling away the curtain on of the biggest bubbles it has created would result in another major financial crisis?
The Dallas Fed, whose new president Robert Steven Kaplan previously worked at Goldman Sachs for 22 years rising to the rank of vice chairman of investment banking, has not responded to our request for a comment as of this writing.

Why Pegs to the US$ Will Break

Speculation is, at last, starting to rise that the HK$/US$ peg could break. The all-powerful governments are suddenly being seen as no so powerful. The massive dollar rally that our model has been forecasting is rather straight-forward. The higher the US$ rises, the more deflation will be exported to economies that are out of sync with the USA.
The dollar haters only talk about the $18 to $19 trillion debt and that is the sole reason, they assume, why commodities must rise and the dollar has to crumble. What they fail to see that it just so happens to be the WORLD. The sea of debt out there has exceeded $200 trillion. When you look at the U.S. government, I hate to say it, but it is a drop in the bucket.
Then we have China in a contractionary decline, Europe being torn apart thanks to the refugee crisis that will only get far worse, and emerging markets who assumed China would buy every commodity in sight forever. There is little hope of anything rising right now to offer any sort of an alternative to the US$ federal debt. Believe it or not, there is a SHORTAGE of federal debt when the entire world has only one place to park BIG MONEY.
Consequently, we will see virtually EVERY currency pegged to the dollar break from Hong Kong to the Middle East. Welcome to BIG BANG.

August 19, 2005 Artist Michael Rakowitz feels strongly about the issue of homelessness. So strongly that when he focussed his creative attentions on the subject he began manifesting practical outcomes, specifically the ParaSITE. The parasite is a is a small, collapsible, double-membrane shelter that uses the escaping warm air from a building’s HVAC system to inflate and warm the temporary home. Rakowitz has now been nominated for a prestigious Index Award for the paraSITE and his work is far from finished. We invited Michael to explain the project.

The issue of homelessness is of global proportions and it is foolish to think that any one proposition will address all the issues associated with this problem. There are many different types of homeless people. The mentally ill, the chemically dependent, those who are unable to afford housing, men, women, families, even those who prefer this way of life are included among the vast cross section of homeless people in every urban instance. Each group of homeless has subjective needs based on circumstance and location. My project does not make reference to handbooks of statistics. Nor should this intervention be associated with the various municipal attempts at solving the homeless issue. This is a project that was shaped by my interaction as a citizen and artist with those who live on the streets.
PARASITISM IS DESCRIBED AS A RELATIONSHIP IN WHICH A PARASITE TEMPORARILY OR PERMANENTLY EXPLOITS THE ENERGY OF A HOST
paraSITE proposes the appropriation of the exterior ventilation systems on existing architecture as a means for providing temporary shelter for homeless people.
PARASITES LIVE ON THE OUTER SURFACE OF A HOST OR INSIDE ITS BODY IN RESPIRATORY ORGANS, DIGESTIVE ORGANS, VENOUS SYSTEMS, AS WELL AS OTHER ORGANS AND TISSUES
The paraSITE units in their idle state exist as small, collapsible packages with handles for transport by hand or on one's back. In employing this device, the user must locate the outtake ducts of a building's HVAC (Heating, Ventilation, Air Conditioning) system.
FREQUENTLY A HOST PROVIDES A PARASITE NOT ONLY WITH FOOD, BUT ALSO WITH ENZYMES AND OXYGEN, AND OFFERS FAVOURABLE TEMPERATURE CONDITIONS
The intake tube of the collapsed structure is then attached to the vent. The warm air leaving the building simultaneously inflates and heats the double membrane structure.
BUT A HOST IS CERTAINLY NOT INACTIVE AGAINST A PARASITE, AND IT HINDERS THE DEVELOPMENT AND POPULATION GROWTH OF PARASITES WITH DIFFERENT DEFENSE MECHANISMS, SUCH AS THE CLEANING OF SKIN, PERISTALTIC CONTRACTION OF THE DIGESTIVE APARATUS, AND THE DEVELOPMENT OF ANTIBODIES
In April of 1997, I proposed my concept and first prototype to a homeless man named Bill Stone, who regarded the project as a tactical response. At the time, the city of Cambridge had made a series of vents in Harvard Square "homeless-proof" by tilting the metal grates, making them virtually impossible to sleep on.
In his book, City of Quartz, Mike Davis describes a similar war on homelessness in Los Angeles. He lists a series of these hindrances throughout the city.
"One of the most common, but mind-numbing, of these deterrents is the Rapid Transit District's new barrelshaped bus bench that offers a minimal surface for uncomfortable sitting, while making sleeping utterly impossible. Such bumproof benches are being widely introduced on the periphery of Skid Row. Another invention, worthy of the Grand Guignol, is the aggressive deployment of outdoor sprinklers. Several years ago the city opened a 'Skid Row Park' along lower Fifth Street, on a corner of Hell.
To ensure that the park was not used for sleeping - that is to say, to guarantee that it was mainly utilized for drug dealing and prostitution - the city installed an elaborate overhead sprinkler system programmed to drench unsuspecting sleepers at random during the night. The system was immediately copied by some local businessmen in order to drive the homeless away from adjacent public sidewalks.
Meanwhile restaurants and markets have responded to the homeless by building ornate enclosures to protect their refuse. Although no one in Los Angeles has yet proposed adding cyanide to the garbage, as happened in Phoenix a few years back, one popular seafood restaurant has spent $12,000 to build the ultimate bag-lady-proof trash cage: made of three-quarter inch steel rod with alloy locks and vicious outturned spikes to safeguard priceless moldering fishheads and stale french fries."
PARASITES RESPOND TO THIS DEFENSE BY ANCHORING THEMSELVES WITH HOOKS AND SUCKERS ONTO SKIN, OR DIGESTIVE MUCOUS MEMBRANE, AND BY DEVELOPING PROTECTIVE DEVICES AND SUBSTANCES WHICH LESSEN DEFENSIVE CAPABILITIES OF THEIR HOST.
The system by which the device attaches or is anchored to the building is designed to allow the structure to be adaptable. The intake tube can be expanded or tightened to fit the aperture of the vent through an adjustable lip made possible by elastic draw-strings. Hooks are attached to the metal louvers for reinforcement.
THERE IS "TENSION" BETWEEN A HOST AND ITS PARASITE, SINCE THE HOST ENDEAVOURS TO GET RID OF THE FOREIGN BODY, WHILE THE PARASITE EMPLOYS NEW WAYS TO MAINTAIN THE CONNECTION WITH THE HOST.
The connection of the inflatable structure to the building becomes the critical moment of this project.
Since February 1998, over thirty prototypes of the paraSITE shelter have been custom built and distributed them to homeless individuals in Cambridge, Boston, New York, and Baltimore. All were built using temporary materials that were readily available on the streets, such as plastic bags and tape.
While these shelters were being used, they functioned not only as a temporary place of retreat, but also as a station of dissent and empowerment; many of the homeless users regarded their shelters as a protest device, and would even shout slogans like "We beat you Uncle Sam!" The shelters communicated a refusal to surrender, and made more visible the unacceptable circumstances of homeless life within the city.
For the pedestrian, paraSITE functioned as an agitational device. The visibly parasitic relationship of these devices to the buildings, appropriating a readily available situation with readily available materials elicited immediate speculation as to the future of the city: would these things completely take over, given the enormous number of homeless in our society? Could we wake up one morning to find these encampments engulfing buildings like ivy?
This project does not present itself as a solution. It is not a proposal for affordable housing.
