This is the observation that one of my girls had, summarized so well by my friend Lanny.
"I went over the Port Mann the other day and saw how low its railing is. You certainly are right about it being a problem. What a poorly designed bridge! Icicles that form on the overhead struts in winter and endanger lives when they fall, and a railing that is only waist high. How did such a design ever pass? How did those designers and engineers manage to pass their exams in university? What a huge waste of tax payer money that went to the firm that submitted that design.
If the railing was chest high, it would give passersby a chance to see a suicidal person climbing up on it and possibly be able to save their life."
I rarely cross bridges now, but I am waiting for a report back from the transportation office as to their thinking when they made this new bridge. It would be great if other folks would also gather details about this bridge and raise caution. This bridge may become the bridge of choice for suicide.
I think the top photo is only a painting but the bottom is real. Note concrete wall that hinders view of pedestrian lane. It is very hard to find a genuine photo of the bicycle/pedestrian lane.
