Police sources said that it was around 2.30 pm that the deceased man climbed-up over the bridge in the area. After receiving the alert, police personnel rushed to spot, even as public began gathering near the bridge. All of them tried to pacify and bring him down, but he did not respond.
Later, the Tamil Nadu Fire and Rescue Service personnel from Thideer Nagar of Periyar Station were called in to bring him down from top of the bridge. A fire service personnel, Thirumurgan told Express that an emergency rescue tender vehicle was brought to the spot. “When we tried to speak to him and pacify, he didn't respond. Whenever the personnel move closer to get hold of him, he moved in a way threatening to jump off,” he said.
The officials even enlisted the support of few members of the public who could speak in Hindi, desperate to make him climb down. But he remained indifferent to all these attempts.
The personnel then tried to reach him using a ladder, but he was about six feet away from them. Two persons from the public then tried climbing up from either side of the arch. When they reached about six-eight feet near the youth, the latter jumped down. The fire service personnel managed to catch him in the net that they had laid below. But the person first hit the railway electric line and fell on to the ground.
He was rushed to a private hospital nearby where doctors declared him dead on arrival.
Inquiries are on to establish the identity of the person, police added.
