NEW WESTMINSTER (NEWS 1130) – As British Columbians get a
better idea of who will form government and the election pledges
they’ll be acting on, police are ensuring their voices are heard on the
potential replacement of the Pattullo Bridge.
With the probability of the BC NDP taking power with the support of the Greens, the province may see immediate funding to replace the Pattullo Bridge – one of the New Democrats’ campaign promises.
New Westminster Police Chief Dave Jones says he wants to see suicide barriers on the replacement.
“I can’t imagine a week goes by that we’re not up there, either for a motor vehicle accident or assisting a person in need up on the bridge deck,” Jones says.
“The bridge is near populated areas and SkyTrain stations, so there’s an ease of access to it.”
Jones believes suicide barriers would be worth the extra costs.
“What we ask for is not unreasonable, and it doesn’t really affect the cost of something that’s worth over a billion dollars. It’s just small measures that we’re looking at.”
Jones believes his concerns will be heard, as he says New Westminster Police will be consulted before the Pattullo replacement is designed.
In Delta, Police Chief Neil Dubord has said barriers should be installed on the Alex Fraser Bridge to help stop people from taking their lives.
The Burrard Bridge and Ironworkers Memorial Bridge both have suicide barriers.
