Ten people were forced out of their home in Surrey early this morning when a fire broke out in their furnace room.
The residents escaped the building safely as firefighters arrived to tackle the blaze in the 9600-block of 139 Street just before 2 a.m. PT.
"I opened the door and I just felt this heat coming from another room," said Rainier Casido, a tenant who has been living in the basement of the house.
"My instinct was, get my wallet, get my phone and get my laptop … I'm originally from Ontario, so all my … memories from Ontario are unfortunately lying in there."
Casido said he was planning on moving out of the house in ten days. He also said he had to leave behind a number of his musical instruments, including a drum kit, in the blaze.
While no one in the house was injured during the escape, a pet bird being kept in the living room did not make it out alive.
"We don't know if the floor is compromised so we don't want to send any firefighters onto the floor," said Ellis.
"There's no other access other than inside access to the basement, so that's the reason we're working from outside."
Ellis said they had to let most of the inside of the house burn before they could safely send crews down to the basement.
The cause of the fire is unknown at this time, but Ellis said it started somewhere in the furnace room.

Stubborn fire
Battalion Chief Richard Ellis with Surrey Fire said his crews had a challenging time fighting the fire."We don't know if the floor is compromised so we don't want to send any firefighters onto the floor," said Ellis.
