A Blind Translator: Do we See?

I just hung up the phone after talking with my mother. She insists that I call her everyday. I promised to her that I would call her everyday. I mentioned to her to be brave and ask the nurses for things, such as icecream, or to be taken outdoors for some fresh air. She told me that she does not want to be 'demanding', and prefers to not befriend the people there. I told her that she is in an old folks home, where the employees are there because she is there, and she can talk about her needs. Somehow she is afraid, I get that sense. Lord, I hope I encouraged her enough to just hang in there for a little while longer. My mom is only 19 years older than me, and she has dementia. She is now forgetting to speak, since no one talks to her in the facility. Most of the people are much lower functioning than she is.
