Former American football star Aaron Hernandez had a severe case of chronic traumatic encephalopathy (CTE), a study has found. 
The former New England Patriots tight end committed suicide in is prison cell in Massachusetts earlier this year. He was 27.

Doctors at Boston University, who studied Hernandez’s brain tissue, found that he had one of the most severe types of CTE, which is caused by repeated head trauma.
CTE can cause depression, anxiety and suicidal thoughts and tendencies.
His legal team said it plans to sue the Patriots and the NFL following the results.

Hernandez was found guilty of murder in 2015 and jailed for life.
Earlier this year, the ex-NFL player was cleared of killing two other men in 2012.

Hernandez was found hanged in his cell, officials from the Massachusetts Department of Correction (DOC) announced at the time.
Authorities tried to revive him, but Hernandez died at UMass Memorial – HealthAlliance Hospital.
In a statement, the DOC said the player was being held in a single cell in a general population unit.

The statement said: ‘Mr Hernandez attempted to block his door from the inside by jamming the door with various items.’
Hernandez murdered semi-pro football player Odin Lloyd in June 2013.
