A Patented Idea

I just got back from taking my Japanese student to look around at Simon Fraser University in Surrey Central. I love how the interior of this structure looks, as it  resembles  an ark; yeah, kind of like Noah's ark.  I took her to the fifth floor, and showed her how those beautiful wood beams decorate the ceiling, while a walkway is floating along the side of the "ark". The classrooms then extend towards the outside wall of the ark.

On our way in, we noticed that the students have created group business ventures. There was a buzzing of activities at all the booths ornamenting the main floor.  Some of the ideas have not yet materialized, but one grade 8 student, (the youngest, of all the students), patented a little plug for the door knobs, that allows a person to enter a room, and not have to break down the door. He was inspired by the fact that his younger brother would keep locking himself into the bathroom. This ingenious, little structure allows anyone to go inside a room, even if it is locked from the inside. At that moment, I reflected on how people who are on suicide watch, or depressed, should always have their door open or their rooms accessible in a family home environment. When a person pulls away and is in their room by themselves for long period of times, that should be an alert of danger to the parents in my opinion. They have to be trusted to family members, to be monitored. I think also it is helpful, to let the person know, that they are watched for their own benefit, and the reason for that supervision. Wouldn't it be something if this boy, with his invention could even help people with mental illness, by having a door that is not lockable, and accessible to those who are monitoring such depressed individuals? I think so. What do you think?
