Ayatollah Mozaffari, a member of Iran’s Assembly of Experts, revealed on Saturday that an official session of the Assembly to elect a successor to the late Supreme Leader is imminent, likely to be held within the next 24 hours.
Mozaffari said in press statements carried by the Iranian Fars News Agency and translated by Shafaq News Agency that the members of the council are waiting for the necessary arrangements to be completed to hold the final consultation session to choose the “new leader,” stressing that the responsibility placed on their shoulders at this stage is “historic and fateful” to calm the street and ensure the stability of the country.
Mozaffari called on citizens and the media not to be swayed by “speculation and rumors” regarding the names of candidates for the position, stressing that no official decision has yet been made pending the convening of the general session of the council.
He explained that the council’s task will focus on selecting the “most competent” person from among the qualified candidates to assume this sovereign position, to be presented later as the new leader of the “Islamic Republic”.
In this context, the clerical bloc in the Iranian Assembly of Experts warned political and media figures against interfering in the work of the Assembly or expressing opinions on its decisions.
The Iranian news agency ISNA quoted a member of the bloc as saying that the members of the Assembly of Experts “are aware of their duties and responsibilities and there is no need for any figures to remind them of that,” while warning officials and individuals against interfering in the affairs of the Assembly.
The Assembly of Experts is the constitutional body responsible for appointing and overseeing the performance of the Supreme Leader in Iran, and it consists of jurists elected by the people for an eight-year term.
