Canada's first full-scale free grocery store has opened in Regina, Saskatchewan. Operated by the Regina Food Bank, the Community Food Hub at 1881 Broad Street offers a grocery store experience where registered clients can shop for free. Each eligible shopper can take up to $200 worth of groceries every two weeks.
Unlike traditional food banks that provide pre-packaged hampers, this model allows individuals to choose their groceries, promoting dignity and reducing food waste. The store is designed to resemble a regular supermarket, complete with produce sections and display fridges, and is open throughout the week.
This initiative aims to serve approximately 25,000 people daily, including children, and addresses the increasing demand for food assistance in the region.
To shop at the Community Food Hub, individuals must be registered with the Regina Food Bank. Appointments are required, and clients can visit every two weeks to select their groceries.
