VIDEO: South Surrey overpass impact ‘sounded like a bomb going off’
Truck strikes 152 Street bridge over Highway 99
The overpass over Highway 99 at 152 Street was damaged Monday
morning, after a semi truck towing a trailer hit it while travelling
north on the highway.
Freeway traffic has been affected northbound – vehicles were being diverted off the highway at 16 Avenue – but overpass traffic was still flowing shortly after 11 a.m. By shortly after noon, northbound traffic along King George Boulevard was also backed up from 16 Avenue, as well.
About four blocks north off the damaged overpass, the truck-and-trailer was pulled off to the side of the highway. Debris – chunks of concrete as well as pieces of the truck and its cargo – was also strewn along the road.
One witness at the scene, who was at a nearby coffee shop at the time of the incident, told Peace Arch News, “It was a loud bang, like a bomb going off… just incredible.”
