I didn't know this

I just came to the realization after talking with a retired doctor, that there are two types of depression. One is from external impacts ie, a divorce, illness, loss of friends etc, and the one that is generated from within. Ofcourse there are medical names for all of this. Sadly, too many family physicians give out medications for depression, anxiety and you name it.. without even knowing the root of the problems in each of the cases. I can't believe that I have fallen into this trap in our own family very recently. How can we allow a family physician after 10 minutes of visit to give us pills that we know nothing about?  Even my husband was frequently, suggested he goes on antidepressants. Truly, this is a drugged world we live in.
The more appropriate step would have been getting a referral to a psychiatrist to determine the cause of the depression or whatever...
I know a dear 82 year old man who has suffered from depression since the age of 12, but he did not know it at the time. He says no pills are good, but by trial and error you may find one that works. Due to his pacemaker now, he is no longer able to take the one that worked for him. Many of these drugs also have the terrible side effect of constipation. If you find your child symptomatic of depression, get in to see a psychologist at a Children's hospital near you. Don't brush it off. Time is of the essence.
