DELTA (NEWS 1130) – There’s something new on the Alex Fraser Bridge that could save lives: six crisis line phones have been set up along the walkways.
The yellow boxes are set up mid-span, on either side.
Ashok Bhatti with the Ministry of Transportation says those phones will connect directly to the Surrey Crisis Centre.
“As a Ministry we’re trying to do whatever we can to be proactive on the issue of suicide prevention. This was an opportunity where we had the right players at the table and so it was an opportune time to make this investment,” he says.
“It’s a direct line to the Surrey Crisis Centre. So inside the box there’s a button you can press and it connects you directly to the Surrey Crisis Centre, and they’re able to assist you in whatever you may be calling about.”
While the phones have been set up, they won’t be activated until later this week.
Earlier this year, the Delta Police Chief raised concerns about the number of people in crisis who use the Alex Fraser Bridge. He has been calling for suicide barriers, like those on the Burrard Bridge and Ironworkers Memorial Bridge.
