Went to the memorial service of a 59 year old man, beloved by his community, church and friends. He passed very quickly and unexpectedly. The family was simply, gracious. The two children spoke well, and even made light of things, sharing some frugal traits of their dad. Catering was done by the same lady who did it when Deborah passed. The spread was huge, filled with a variety of delicious finger foods, too many to name. I met pastors, one of whom baptized my second eldest in her teen years. He travels to the Ukraine often and sometimes he does motivational speaking. I prefer him as a pastor for sure. I met pastor's wives, old friends from the Island whom we spent Christmas with over many years. I saw families whose children have now grown up, and some who married. I saw the pillars of the church, the church this departed helped build. His dedication later extended to looking after his wife who had a much more turbulent recovery from a joint replacement than I did. Our children went to school with theirs for a while.
The chapter from Revelations was read, about the streets of gold. I lingered amongst folks I haven't seen for over two years. We hugged, and shared. The fact that I got lost going there, and arrived late didn't seem to matter any more. The car had a good long run, and along the way I saw many bald eagles along the Ladner Trunk Road. It was as if it was out of a postcard.
Isaiah 40;31
New International Version
but
those who hope in the LORD will renew their strength. They will soar on
wings like eagles; they will run and not grow weary, they will walk and
not be faint.
May this dear widow and her children experience that they too will soar, and be overcomers.
