Yesterday, I went out for dinner and regretted it afterwards. You see with the Corona Virus outbreak worldwide, I know better now to isolate myself as much as possible. I am not afraid for my life but my little grand-daughter is also vulnerable if exposed, so in order for her to be healthy, we also have to stay healthy. This virus is 2.5 stronger than the Spanish Flu was. You must wash your hands often, buy N-95 masks, latex free rubber gloves, plastic eye glasses that wraps around your eyes. A sneeze 5 feet away by an infected person can pass on this deadly virus to you. Kindly, get all these protective gears, as well as food and water in case there will be a run on the banks and the grocery stores.

I talked to my Hungarian friend today, and he told me that there are lots of Chinese people in Hungary also. Stay away from large public crowds, Uber taxis, doctors offices, hospitals. Remember once it is caught there is no treatment for this horrible disease.
You will hear little in the news until it is too late. I will take a break now with my posts so you can prepare your family for the worst possible scenario.

HOW OLD IS GRANDMA?

Stay with this -- the answer is at the end -- it will blow you away.

One evening a grandson was talking to his grandmother about current events. The grandson asked his grandmother what she thought about the shootings at schools, the computer age, and just things in general.

The Grandma replied, "Well, let me think a minute, I was born before:

•        television,

•        penicillin,

•        polio shots,

•        frozen foods,

•        Xerox,

•        contact lenses,

•        Frisbees and

•        the pill.

There was no:

•        radar,

•        credit cards,

•        laser beams or

•        ball-point pens.

Man had not yet invented:

•        pantyhose,

•        air conditioners,

•        dishwashers,

•        clothes dryers,

•        and the clothes were hung out to dry in the fresh air and

•         man hadn't yet walked on the moon.

Your Grandfather and I got married first - and then lived together.

Every family had a father and a mother.

Until I was 25, I called every man older than I, 'Sir - and after I turned 25, I still called policemen and every man with a title, "Sir.'

We were before gay-rights, computer-dating, dual careers, daycare centers, and group therapy.

Our lives were governed by the Ten Commandments, good judgment, and common sense.

We were taught to know the difference between right and wrong and to stand up and take responsibility for our actions.

Serving your country was a privilege; living in this country was a bigger privilege.

We thought fast food was what people ate during Lent.

Having a meaningful relationship meant getting along with your cousins.

Draft dodgers were people who closed their front doors when the evening breeze started.

Time-sharing meant time the family spent together in the evenings and weekends - not purchasing condominiums.

We never heard of FM radios, tape decks, CDs, electric typewriters, yogurt, or guys wearing earrings.

We listened to the Big Bands, Jack Benny, and the President's speeches on our radios.

And I don't ever remember any kid blowing his brains out listening to Tommy Dorsey.

If you saw anything with 'Made in Japan' on it, it was junk.

The term 'making out' referred to how you did on your school exam.

Pizza Hut, McDonald's, and instant coffee were unheard of.

We had 5 & 10-cent stores where you could actually buy things for 5 and 10 cents.

Ice-cream cones, phone calls, rides on a streetcar, and a Pepsi were all a nickel.

And if you didn't want to splurge, you could spend your nickel on enough stamps to mail 1 letter and 2 postcards.

You could buy a new Chevy Coupe for $600 but who could afford one?

Too bad, because gas was 11 cents a gallon.

In my day:

•        "grass" was mowed,

•        "coke" was a cold drink,

•        "pot" was something your mother cooked in and

•        "rock music" was your grandmother's lullaby.

•        "Aids" were helpers in the Principal's office,

•        " chip" meant a piece of wood,

•        "hardware" was found in a hardware store and

•         "software" wasn't even a word.

And we were the last generation to actually believe that a lady needed a husband to have a baby.

No wonder people call us "old and confused" and say there is a generation gap...

and how old do you think I am?

Adjusting to life Here

I'm feeding the birds millet in our back yard. One neighbour must have taken notice and let the manager know. We were informed that due to the possible rats coming to feed on the birdfood, we are not allowed to feed these adorable birds. It has been record cold, wind and snowstorms here. Some of the bridges and highways closed.
I'm planning on making a nice Gulyas soup for tomorrow, which will last us over the weekend. Hubby bought just the right cut of meat (a little on the fatty side of beef) and vegetables to make a big pot. I am already fearing the chopping process since my right hand hurts from all the packing that I did this year. I sure hope my carpal tunnel condition is not coming back.

My dear friend in her late 60's is self admitting herself to an assisted living home. This has made me feel sad as of late. I can hardly imagine leaving spouse behind, and taking this step, unless one truly feels they can't cope with the day to day responsibilities of life. I feel very thankful, that my husband and I are still hanging in with all our disappearing might. I don't know how the years will play out, but I still want to be a witness and support for those who have lost loved ones to suicide, and for those suffering from mental health/psychosis. I want to re-surrender myself to God into this calling if He chooses me to be there for others. I just recently posted Deborah singing "heroes" on my facebook page. Her voice is so missed. Her talent was so grand in all areas of life.

My 60th Today

Eventhough today is my 60th birthday, I thought that I must post a few things because suicide contemplation in the minds of humanity never takes a rest. I post these things as a warning of the devastation of lives out there that are seldom covered or discussed because of the stigma attached. I do hope that as we carry forward in hope that we will be more supportive in our communities and places of work in viewing and understanding mental health and depression.
I told my husband in the middle of the night that last year was a very difficult one. Downsizing from a huge family home with tenants to a 55 plus aged complex with a total of 1190 sq feet was a huge undertaking fought with daily challenges leading up to the big day. Today as I stand here typing in my new kitchen, I feel accomplished, yet somewhat fearful of what my hip surgery will bring about. This is my second one they will be doing likely in the spring. I also said to my husband that I am happy with my age, and would not want to be one year younger or older than what I am. I am a survivor of many things. I will miss my youngest and treasured daughter today , Deborah Gordon on my day of celebration, Usually, it is the ones we don't have with us that hurt the most was a saying I heard before.. Well it is true. Eventhough, my family will be together; Deborah's absence will be a huge hole.
My little grand-daughter with similar dimples on her cheeks as Deborah will adorn my arms as I greet the world today. Be strong my friends, and of good courage because Jesus overcame the World and He is coming back soon. We will see our loved ones again!!!!

A woman and a man were found dead Friday in the central city of Petah Tikva in a suspected murder-suicide.
The couple were discovered at their apartment by the woman’s son, and pronounced dead at the scene.

An Army jawan committed suicide by shooting himself with his service rifle in a camp in Jammu and Kashmir's Udhampur district, police said on Saturday.
Sepoy Prince Kumar (25), a resident of Hoshiarpur in Punjab, was posted in 112 Territorial Army and was on guard duty when he shot himself at Chinar camp in Rehambal area on Friday, a police official said.
The official said that the motive behind the extreme step was not known immediately.
The body of the deceased would be handed over to his unit after the completion of medical and other legal formalities which were underway, he said.

Well, winter has arrived in British Columbia, Canada here on the main coast. Minus temperatures, and snow as well as wind encompass our land. Many schools have closed, yet many remained open. Staying, dry and off the roads is most recommended. I have been feeding the wildlife outside our patio door. Healthwise we are hanging in there, and have started to get educated on the benefits of vitamins since my husband's trip to Gibsons. We want to be as healthy as possible for our old age, for the benefit of our grandchildren and children. Keep in mind the low's after the holidays. Our moods change constantly and you must talk with a friend if you have any downturns in your mood swings. Life is hard, and living without friends and family is even harder. Embrace each other and reach out even if you are mostly a solemn, home body individual. Treat yourself to company, or even a telephone conversation. You matter to me, and to others.

VANCOUVER (NEWS 1130) — The Vancouver Police Department has been ordered to let go of one of its sergeants following an internal investigation and death of one of its own members.
Cst. Nicole Chan took her own life last January following, what is being described as, an inappropriate relationship with Sgt. David Van Patten.
There was an internal investigation into his actions and the actions of another superior officer for several months prior to this decision by the Office of the Police Complaint Commissioner.
The three allegations of “Discredible Conduct” were confirmed during the investigation.
“The Vancouver Police respect the OPCC process and the final outcome. We continue to grieve the loss of Constable Chan and provide support to our membership as needed. The Vancouver Police will continue to be in touch with Constable Chan’s family,” says Sgt. Aaron Roed.
Police officers have the right for their dismissal to be reviewed by a retired judge through a public hearing. The Police Complaint Commissioners can also order a public hearing.
So far, neither of these requests has been made.

Raising the minimum wage by $1 or more appears to have a protective effect against suicide, especially in times when unemployment is high and it's hard to find a job.

A new study suggests that raising the minimum wage might lower the suicide rate — especially when unemployment is high — and that doing so might have saved tens of thousands of people from dying by suicide in the last quarter century.
The minimum federal minimum wage is $7.25, though many states have set it higher. Between 1990 and 2015, raising the minimum wage by $1 in each state might have saved more than 27,000 lives, according to a report published this week in the Journal of Epidemiology & Community Health. An increase of $2 in each state's minimum wage could have prevented more than 57,000 suicides.
"This is a way that you can, it seems, improve the well-being of people working at lower-wage jobs and their dependents," says John Kaufman, the lead author on the study and an epidemiology doctoral student at Emory University.

Crucially, researchers found that raising the minimum wage appears to reduce the suicide rate more when it's harder to find a job. In bad times, the same $1 increase could save more people than it might during good times.
"The higher unemployment is, the stronger that potential protective effect appears to be," says Kaufman.
The researchers found that 26,000 deaths could have been prevented following the 2009 peak in unemployment during the last recession had the minimum wage been $2 higher.
The report focused on less-educated adults because that group is more likely to earn the minimum wage. That group is also at a higher risk of depression and suicide, says Kaufman. Raising the minimum wage did not seem to affect whether college graduates would die by suicide.
A number of other researchers are exploring the connections between the economy and our well-being. The study is the third in less than a year to show that raising the minimum wage may lower suicide rates, says Dr. Alexander Tsai, an associate professor of psychiatry at Harvard's Massachusetts General Hospital, who was not involved with the current research.
A working paper published by the National Bureau of Economic Research in April 2019 estimated that raising the minimum wage and the earned income tax credit by 10% each could prevent 1,230 people from dying by suicide each year.

The family of a young Vancouver police constable who took her own life wants answers from the force, wondering if her mental health issues were compounded by her relationships with two senior officers. Global News

The Vancouver Police Department has been ordered to dismiss a senior officer over an inappropriate relationship with a young constable who later died by suicide.
An investigation ordered by the Office of the Police Complaint Commissioner (OPCC) revealed Sgt. Dave Van Patten entered into a relationship with Const. Nicole Chan while Van Patten was a human resources officer for the department.
Three allegations of discreditable conduct were found to be substantiated, leading to penalties against Van Patten that include an order he be dismissed from the VPD.

The order was announced by the OPCC on Thursday, but no final decision on Van Patten’s fate has been announced by the VPD.
“This is a serious and tragic matter,” deputy police complaint commissioner Andrea Spindler said in a statement, adding no other details could be released as proceedings are still underway under the Police Act.

Chan came forward in 2017 with accusations of inappropriate relationships with two senior officers at a time when her sister said she was struggling with anxiety and depression.

After being put on stress leave for the second time following her speaking out, the nine-year veteran of the VPD took her own life in January 2019.
Van Patten remained with the force, but has since been suspended, the VPD confirmed Thursday.
In June 2019, Vancouver police Chief Adam Palmer said the OPCC was immediately called after Chan came forward. The OPCC then tasked the New Westminster Police Department with leading the investigation.
A report was written by then-chief constable Dave Jones, who issued his final decision on Jan. 2, 2020, after overseeing a disciplinary hearing for Van Patten.

The OPCC notes officers facing dismissal have an automatic right to request the decision be reviewed by a retired judge through a public hearing.
No public hearing has been set for Van Patten as of Thursday.
The second officer accused by Chan, Sgt. Greg McCullough, was given a 15-day suspension, in part for “entering into a relationship knowing Nicole was in a vulnerable state, mentally and emotionally.” He later resigned from the force.

In an email, VPD spokesperson Const. Tania Visintin said the department “respects the OPCC process and the final outcome,” and remains in touch with Chan’s family.

“We continue to grieve the loss of Constable Chan and provide support to our membership as needed,” Visintin said.
In her own statement, Chan’s sister Jenn Chan said the family is satisfied with the order to dismiss Van Patten, but remains “deeply concerned” about the events leading up to Chan’s death.
“The termination of Sgt. Van Patten represents one step in our ongoing efforts to get justice for Nicole,” Jenn Chan said.
“More needs to be done to hold those who abused their power accountable and for Nicole’s friends and family, this issue is far from resolved.”
