Making Stay at home Motherhood Illegal

Years ago, when a UN Committee sought to eliminate Mother’s Day because it identified “Mother” as a “negative stereotype that needs to be eliminated,” some people thought that was just a temporary radical feminist moment of insanity.

But the madness seems to have taken root. Today, we continue to see anti-motherhood messages pushed around the world.

At the 2017 UN Commission on the Status of Women (CSW), language was introduced into the Agreed Conclusions document that labels “unpaid care work” (read: the work of mothers) as a “burden” that should be eliminated through “recognizing, reducing, and redistributing,” including through “National Care Systems” (read: government-sponsored daycare).

While childcare can be a great help to those who need it, claiming that the government is a better parent than a stay-at-home mother is degrading to women. Not only that, but it is simply not true.
And while some feminists proudly support this claim, what they do not realize is that it actually disempowers women. The anti-motherhood movement says that women who choose to stay home have no value, because daycare could do a better job raising their children. According to them, by staying home these women are failing to contribute to society. 

This idea limits women, the very opposite of what feminist claim they want to achieve.

As unbelievable as it may seem, some organizations want to legally limit a woman's choice to stay at home with her children. Dangerous rhetoric—such as statements that claim "we should make it a legal requirement that all parents of children of school age or older are gainfully employed"—put motherhood at risk. These organizations and individuals are working every day to make this a reality and take away women’s choices.

Thankfully, the majority of people still understand that these ideas go too far. Over 90 percent of the world’s women will be mothers by the time they are 45, and 54 percent of women who have always worked say they would prefer to stay home with their children. Additionally, according to the Pew Research Center, about half (52%) of millennials say being a good mother and father is one of their top priorities in life.

The anti-motherhood message of the UN is out of touch with what women really want. Instead of empowering women, they DIS-EMPOWER women who want to stay home to invest in their children’s development and well-being.
